Stick ‘Em Up

Mike got a hand gun for Christmas and we ended the year with a trip to the shooting range to learn how to use it.  Knowledge is power, and I would much rather the girls know about gun safety and how to use one—just in case!  You just never know and it’s naïve to think things can’t happen to you—as they are every bit as likely to you as they are to anyone else…

Oh yeah—they are ready!!

Clara was first up.  We figured the girls would do pretty good with it since they have been shooting with the pellet gun Mike got a few years ago.  That’s a favorite to do in the back yard and they have very good aim!

Clara did a good job!  She is not consistent—but she did hit the target—all over the target :)  The important thing learned though is how to make sure the safety is on, never to point at anyone, but hold it away from you and everyone else, to check to see if loaded, how to load, safety measures, and then how to shoot!  She was never afraid of the recoil (there isn’t much, but there is some) or the ricochet of the shell.

Lucy did a great job—she however, was afraid of it at first.  It didn’t take long before she learned you have to keep your eyes open and focus  LOL!

Lucy was quite consistent and has her target proudly displayed in her room.

The hardest part for me was figuring out if I am left or right handed with shooting.  They feel the same.  You can see on my target, I was consistent with coming in just below the middle square (I think I figured out why now), and depending on which hand I was using I was to the left or to the right.  Mike asked me some questions and determined that I am right eye dominant so I should shoot with my right hand—so that is what I do.

I didn’t know if we were going to get the girls out of the range!!  We all really enjoyed it!  We will get a pass to the sheriffs range and get to go more often, as it would really add up to go to this range all the time.  We only went to the indoor range this time because it was cold outside.  We look forward to going with friends of ours too.  We hope that when our time comes to buy a house that there will be somewhere to shoot at home too.  We will just have to wait and see about that one….
