This past school year for co-op Lucy has been in a robotics class. Last summer when we were deciding on classes and she was the robotics option she was set on it! I was surprised actually. It was offered at the same time as sewing too, and I thought for sure that is the way she was going to go, but she didn’t waiver once—it was robotics period! I warned her that she may well be the only girl in the class, but she was fine with that too.
As it turned out, she was in fact the only girl :) This was a favorite time for her each and every week though! Her teachers (a husband and wife team) were SO very impressed with her! At the end of the year, her one teacher approached me to tell me how gifted Lucy is. She explained that her and her husband both recognized right away in the beginning of the year that Lucy is dyslexic. They too are dyslexic so it was easy for them to recognize. We truly do believe that dyslexia is a gifting though, not a hindrance! It poses a challenge for traditional schooling things, such as reading and spelling, but we are getting past that, but in instances with spacial placement and being able to see things differently (and in many cases more clearly) she took to robotics right away!
Anyway, they HIGHLY recommended that Lucy continue on with the follow up class which is a high school level class!! They said they have no doubt that Lucy will be able to keep up, if not even surpass the high schoolers though! The programming they are going to be using for that class is something that Mike is familiar with too. That means we can start up some good at home projects too (you know, in our spare time haha)!!
This was the end of the year demonstration—a course for robot battles.
Lucy with her tank! She built the tank and the controller from scratch!
Way to go baby girl!! We are very proud of you! We are enrolling her in the high school class, which did require that we switch co-ops. So, in the fall we will be in the Monroe Co-op as opposed to the West Monroe Co-op. It was a big decision to switch, as we were so comfortable at the WM one. Lucy really struggled with it, and after talking to her a while I figured out that she was having issues because she was liking this switch to a MOVE! She kept talking about never seeing her friends again and how difficult that will be. She has gotten past all that now, and understands that she will in fact still be seeing her friends, and she was happy to learn that she knows so many of the kids that go to Monroe too. We are all very excited about the switch now (shew!!).
I will be teaching two classes next year—beginner sign language, and a prayer class which I am super excited about as God has given this whole thing to me and I can’t wait to see what all He will do with it! I will also be instructing GEMS (I can’t remember right now what that stands for, but it is a Christ Centered alternative to Girl Scouts). Also, I am a helper in a Pinterest class which I can’t wait for!!! I love Pinterest and I wanted to sign up for the class to take LOL So, now I get to take it some what by helping out in it. Lucy will be in that class too and she is SO excited about that!
Also for the homeschooling community I am starting a new ministry—Prayer and Care. I am really excited about that as well. Logistically I am not sure how it is all going to work out, but again this is something that God was very clear about and it was just approved by the board so I will be working on getting that up and running.
Other school news is that the girls and I are going to continue school through the summer. We never want (ok, I never want) to take months off in a row because too much review is needed and doesn’t make any sense to me. We are not full on, and have the flexibility to take some time off. June is a crazy busy month for us so I know we will have time off then, but the days we can I plan on getting some things done.
