Felix caught a skink in the back yard. From inside it looked like he had a snake in his mouth and we went running to get it away from him in case he was in danger. When we got there we found that he didn’t have a snake, but a very large lizard! He dropped it and we grabbed it up and put it in our handy dandy cage to observe and study him.
The girls drew pictures of it in their nature journals and researched what it was. He is a broad headed skink—male, in mating season which is when their heads are red. This particular guy had lost part of his tail which made him very distinguishable.
Freeing the skink. He did not want to come out!
We released him in the front yard so he would be safe from Felix in the back. The next day while walking the dog we found him flattened on the road :( We knew it was him because of the tail… Poor little fella!
We also found this snake skin in the back yard. A bit disconcerting to find that I must say! We have not seen the owner of the skin and I don’t wish to! We are hoping with the dog in and out and Felix out there often that he will just move on---Mouse is out there too, but the Mouse would be more afraid of the snake, then the snake afraid of Mouse.
