In Cullman (about 20 min away) is this wonderful place---the Ave Maria Grotto. It is the site of a Monastery and a long time ago one of the monks---Brother Zoettl, made great use of his time there by sculpting. His collection spans over 4 acres and is phenomenal!! People would send him found objects, broken marble, broken glass, etc for him to incorporate into his artwork. He died in the 60's, but his work has been beautifully preserved and maintained. Other artists have added to the collection over the years as well.
It was a gorgeous day to spend outdoors and this was a wonderful adventure. The girls loved it as well and I am sure we will be going back again and again. As we study things in history too, it will be fun to be able to go and see his depiction of certain places that he has sculpted. For instance we have studied the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and it was cool for all of us to get to see what he envisioned it to be like.
