We have started participating with a ministry called “Live It Out” and as the first mission we were able to take part in we went to a local nursing home. The girls made cards for the residents (which made great copy work for school), and they were so proud to hand them out to everyone!
The residents were brought in to the dining room for our visit. We got to go to them one on one and visit with them, give them the card, pray with them, and just bless them (and in turn of course we were blessed). I tried to prepare the girls for what to expect beforehand, but it isn’t the same as seeing it. Clara was so overwhelmed at first that she began to cry seeing all the people in wheelchairs. She pulled herself together though and presented herself beautifully! Lucy, as usual was gracious and loving with each resident. There was only one man who was unfriendly and threw their card back at them and said he didn’t need it. That is expected though, unfortunately, as I know from my years working in nursing homes as an Audiologist. The girls were a bit shocked at first, but I showed them how you just pick the card up, place it on the table and rub the mans back telling him that he doesn’t have to take it, but it was made for him with love and it’s his if he wants it and then move on. Bless his heart---he has gotten lots of prayer!
Another family there performed songs and recitation which the residents loved!! It was a wonderful experience and we are excited about serving the community in other ways (and coming back to the nursing home) through this wonderful ministry!
Oh, the picture is just out front of the nursing home. This was a VERY nice place!!! The staff seemed very attentive and gracious as well which was good to see. Boy have I seen the opposite, which just breaks your heart---but this place gives nursing homes a good name!
