For our trip we decided to stop half way and spend the night at Mammoth Cave in Kentucky. We knew there was no way we were going to do an 18 hour drive in one day! Lucy has been learning about caves in her General Science class and had recently mentioned that she would love to go to Mammoth Cave---so when the trip was decided upon and the path was mapped out, we knew this was our first stop for sure!!
Our hotel was in Horse Cave, KY. Not a lot in this area! I mean, really not a LOT at all!! You are out there in the middle of nothingness! There was a highly rated restaurant locally that we decided to try out. It was a hole in the wall, and only take check or cash. We didn’t have enough cash on us so they told us to mail them a check!! As it turns out Clara had her money so she paid for dinner (we paid her back lol), but we couldn’t believe the level of trust!!
This restaurant was AWESOME!! One thing they are very proud about in this area is Ski. It’s like a cross between Mountain Dew and Sprite. We had to try it of course. It was good, but nothing great—but we don’t really like soda much anyway.
Cracks me up—like mother like daughter—both blinking
Lucy drinking her Ski
In the hotel we had so much fun playing with shadow puppets. We did find out that they photograph well with a flash---duh
At the cave! We decided to do the longer tour, which we knew meant getting to Ohio later, but when will be back to Mammoth Cave—who knows if ever, so we went for it.
Waiting for the tour to begin.
Going down into the natural entrance of the cave. It has been many, many years since Mike and I were here—it was cool to be back with our kids! I did not get many pictures in the cave. Lucy did, some good ones too. I need to download her pictures and add them to the blog—eventually! I’m doing good if I get my own downloaded and blogged!
A funny thing in the cave—we came around a corner and a light was shining on a wall, so we were jumping around in front of the light making menacing shadows on the wall. Lucy was taking pictures of these shadow creatures. I realized after a few minutes that ALL OF US were making faces and noises to go along with the creatures we were making on the wall of the cave—only the shadows were being photographed—no need for sound or faces!! Then we laughed so hard I thought we would all pee our pants!
While in KY we found a geocache—it was an interesting place just off the road that sold rocks mainly from what we could tell. It wasn’t open (this was on Sunday), but the outside décor was interesting too. I don’t know the story of the knight, but it sure was cool!
